Winterreise

„Fremd bin ich eingezogen, fremd zieh' ich wieder aus“: these first words of Schubert's song cycle also resonate at the beginning of Jelinek's texts. Like the wanderer in Schubert's songs, Jelinek's lyrical self wanders restlessly through the world.
It is about loneliness, about inner emigration, about being and remaining a stranger in the world. Jelinek interweaves formative impressions and experiences from her own biography, such as the difficult relationship with her mother and her father's dementia, with social events in her text.
